Placid Pools has been a family run business since its inception in 1978.
Joe Spelta established Placid Pools in 1978, initially as a home business, that grew with our reputation in custom-built pools. It is Joe’s can do attitude, work ethic and ability to encapsulate clients visions of their dream pools, that has stood the test of time, which has driven growth in the business and took us to where we are today.
Joe has overcome natural disasters, the Global Financial Crisis, and the rollercoaster of life to continue to grow Placid Pools with hard work, customer focus and reliability. Placid Pools built the largest pool in the Southern Hemisphere in Palm Cove in the 1980’s! Our belief in building our client’s dream custom pools remains the heart of the business, as Joe hands on his legacy to the next generation of Spelta’s.
The Team
Mark Spelta
Mark joined Placid Pools at age 15, as it was a natural progression after seeing his dad build the business from scratch. He was hands on constructing the pools and learning all the trades from the beginning. Mark’s transition into a management role evolved due to his hands on knowledge across the organisation, the advancement in technology and his ability to articulate and envision our clients dream pools. Mark won the National Pool Designer 2022 Award at the SPASA Australia National Awards of Excellence.
Amanda Spelta
Amanda joined the business after completing her Bachelor of Business & Human Resources. She discovered her passion in water technology and together with the team innovated the Tropical Innovation of Placidity Pools, another dream that her father handed down when he came back from a overseas show and said, “They told me we cant do this in the tropics….lets do it!” She enjoys various roles from customer service, WH&S and managing Pools in Paradise. Amanda brings with her a special energy that is people focused.
Tanya Spelta
Tanya joined Placid Pools after completing her Business Diploma. She built the retail arm of the business, as Placid Pools moved into the Ardisia Street premises after operating from home, to then becoming the CFO. Tanya is our longest standing Administrative Officer (who started typing out quotes since the tender age of 12) and brings her eye for detail and accuracy to everything she does. She loves nothing more than building long term relationships with our employees, customers, and suppliers alike.
Lisa O'Connell
Lisa recently joined Placid Pools as our General Manager. She brings with her a diverse range of skills from her careers in Finance, Human Resources and Business Analysis. Lisa is a people person, who knows that great people thrive in the right culture and that is a win-win for everyone. She is passionate about building open, honest, trustworthy relationships with employees, customers and third parties we interact with. Lisa returns to us after a decade away and we welcome her back to the Placid Pools Family.
Our Story
In 1978, Joe Spelta was working for a pool construction company that hit hard times and collapsed, leaving clients with empty, half-finished pools in their back gardens. Joe felt he had made a commitment to finish those pools, so he did – all on his own.
With his Italian commitment to quality combined with Aussie grit and tenacity, this wasn’t enough for Joe, who had a dream of creating the largest swimming pool display centre in Australia. That dream became a reality in 2004, when Placid Pools opened their showroom in Smithfield, where they continue to operate today.
It was important to Joe that the next generation of his family took an interest in his passion, and as such, they were swimming before they were walking. Growing up locally, the kids could be seen at Tobruk Swimming Pool or natural creeks and waterholes in FNQ. They have often been the source of ambitious and creative pool designs for the entire Spelta family – with some added Italian quality and flare for good measure.
Placid Pools’ commitment to both quality and our customers has led to over 9000 pool installations, where Joe’s children Tanya, Amanda and Mark (along with a team of dedicated staff and experienced Craftsmen & Wonder Women) now run daily operations, exemplifying the family work ethic and pool knowledge and their combined skill and passion for pool construction.

Display Centre
Placid Pools are Far North Queensland’s largest pool construction company and we also boast the biggest pool showroom in Queensland. Our showroom consists of a number of different pools that showcase all of the varieties of pool that we can design and install for you, including our own Placidity pool system.
Showroom
The Placid Pools showroom is also home to Cairns Spa Centre, which offers the biggest selection of spas available anywhere in FNQ. We have a number of spas available on site for you to learn about, and even more available to order.
Pool Shop
Our Pool Shop is fully equipped with everything you need to keep your pool in pristine condition. In the tropics it can be extra tricky to keep your pool in a swimmable state – but with a little assistance from the Placid Pools team you’ll be right as rain.
A few years ago we realised the untapped potential of our beautiful Display Centre – not only a testament to Placid Pools’ construction and design credentials, it’s also the perfect place to host a pool party!
